About Me

WHY TEACH ABROAD?
I decided to come to Namibia after reading Half the Sky Nicholas Kristof, because he said that education (especially for women) is the only proven way to improve the status of a third world country.  He listed a number of organizations he supports, and WorldTeach was one of them.  (I think this is as good a time as any to say that none of the opinions expressed in this blog are affiliated with WorldTeach, or Rukonga Vision School.)

WHY NAMIBIA?
I studied Biology and Society in undergrad, with a focus on reproduction, so I knew I wanted to be in a country where HIV/AIDS has a high incidence, so that brought me to Namibia.  My Masters is in teaching, so I also wanted to come to a country where the WorldTeach program finds a fit for you based on the subject needs of your school.  It meant I could teach biology and health!

HOBBIES
In high school, I was always involved in theater and worked as a life guard.  I also love sailing with my dad, but that doesn't happen nearly as often as it should.  When I was in college, I swam a lot, took dance classes and worked with Melodramatics Theater Company to produce musicals.  Throughout my life, I've loved camping and summer camps. Now that I'm here, I've added tennis and writing to my list of hobbies!

TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
As I gain experience teaching, my teaching philosophy has become more structured.  I would like to give kids opportunities to learn in a setting as similar to a summer camp as possible.  I think that way, they can gain major leadership skills, connect with their world in a tangible way, and feel empowered to learn.

Holler at me if you have any questions!
